Reading: Comprehension

Going Visual – Understanding the Link Between Comprehending What We See and Reading Instruction

Based on proficient reader research, being able to create mental images, story worlds, and visual models while one reads is essential to reading comprehension. In this active workshop, Barry Hoonan will show how to involve and engage readers in text through powerful visual strategies. Borrowing from the seminal work of Dr. Jeffrey Wilhelm, Barry will demonstrate and share a variety of visual strategies and techniques that pushes meaning for the struggling readers and extends the abilities of even our better readers.

Participants will learn that 'going visual' is as much about excellent teaching and learning as it is boosting reading comprehension. Workshop highlights:

  • learn how to use drawing and mind maps to enhance visual learning;
  • learn how to use drama to help readers engage and remember;
  • learn how Ôgoing visual' increases' understanding of content and builds meaningful connections.

Barry promises to make this a ÒvisualÓ and memorable learning experience.
