Reading: Comprehension

Inspiring Brilliant Reading and Creating ACTIVE Readers

Barry Hoonan, National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) 2004 Outstanding Educator in Language Arts award winner, will share the link between what research is telling us about reading comprehension and which strategies make the most sense in helping readers learn and comprehend deeply.

In this engaging session, Barry will share lively literature examples, demonstrate how to help readers overcome tricky text, and show how being an active reader makes a significant difference in reading for understanding.

Barry Hoonan, co-author of Beyond Reading and Writing, will involve participants in answering questions, such as; how do we teach students to tackle tricky, difficult text? What does current research tell us about proficient reader strategies? What strategies make a difference in helping students read and understand content?
