Using Vocabulary to Build Strong Readers and Writers


Good readers have large listening and reading vocabularies. This workshop will give teachers strategies for helping students expand their vocabulary before, during and after reading. Included in the workshop are techniques for getting students to use context clues to identify new words and use prefixes, suffixes, and word roots to understand new words.

Participants will:

  • Understand how and why vocabulary instruction is essential for increasing reading achievement.
  • Become familiar with the latest research on increasing student vocabulary.
  • Learn strategies for building and increasing student vocabulary.
