Reading: Best Practices

A Tale of Two Genres: Fiction & Expository Texts, Structures & Features

Fountas and Pinnell's 2001 book Guiding Readers and Writers Grades 3-6, set me on the path of enlightenment, seeing genre with eyes. With their guidance, we'll be taking a look at formats, genres and elements of fiction and nonfiction. You'll leave with a clearer and cleaner sense of the intricacies of these texts and how to best support your students in the wide range of texts in their world. I had some "Ah-ha's" that have enhanced my teaching of these familiar types of literature and think you will, too.
